Meet State Senator James Maroney
State Senator James Maroney has represented Connecticut’s 14th Senatorial District since 2019. The district encompasses Milford, Orange, and parts of West Haven and Woodbridge. James is a 1992 graduate of Jonathan Law High School and a 1996 graduate of Yale University. At Yale, he was a three-time varsity letter winner in both Cross-Country and Track, and was elected the captain of the track team. This past session he served as co-chair of the General Law Committee and the Regulation Review Committee, he was vice-chair of the veterans committee and also served on the Higher Education Committee, the Insurance Committee, the Finance Committee, and the screening committee.
Senator Maroney’s Political History
This is not the first time Senator Maroney has held elective office. He was a State Representative for the 19th District from 2012-2014, where he served on the Higher Education Committee. Due to his distinguished service on the Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee, he was asked to serve on the Planning Commission for Higher Education and help develop a strategic plan for higher education in Connecticut. Before representing constituents in Hartford, Senator Maroney served on the Milford Board of Education.
Senator Maroney is an Active Member of the Community
Prior to politics, Sen. Maroney was active in several civic and community groups in Milford. He is a past president and founding member of the Milford Education Foundation. He is a member and past president of the Devon Rotary, where he is the co-chair of the scholarship committee.
Senator Maroney is a Successful Businessperson
Immediately after college, James worked on Wall Street trading stocks, but after a short time he decided to return home to Milford and start a business helping high school students achieve their higher education dreams. Senator Maroney founded First Choice College Placement in January of 1999. The mission of his business is to make young people’s higher education dreams come to fruition. Students at First Choice are encouraged to make community service a priority. In addition, the business donates to scholarships and makes practice SAT and ACT tests available to the community for free. First Choice is a member of the Milford Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Milford Business Association.
Senator Maroney lives in Milford with his wife Jennifer and his son Jay.
